"Yeeeaaah...but even back on the mountain I wasn't doing this close enough to the falls to be drowned out." That might not be entirely true, but he'd have moved them somewhere else as soon as he realized he'd be fighting to be heard. Back then, because youth.
"Okay, I'll amend that to being terrible at being clear I'm courting you then," he says teasing lightly. "The point is, I tried back then and it just wasn't your thing. So now I'm doing this instead. Even if you're already my mate, I know you appreciate the clear expression for at least a while you had concerns about us."
Wukong chuckles. Some things really haven't changed much.
"Well, maybe this will help that fear finally," he suggests, holding the box out. It's got a good weight to it, not so much that either of them absolutely has to use both hands, but definitely encouraging it. The other three sides of it depict more moments they shared: sparring together, grooming each other, and curled up in the nest together. The top of the lid shows them back to back, prepared to defend each other. But Macaque is displayed through a pearl-like white paint and Wukong with a bright yellow-orange. Like a sun and moon.
Inside the box is the main gift though. A large clear orb, roughly the size of a basketball. Inside, a sun floats in place, created with magic obviously and floats around to gently warm his skin if he touches the orb. A peach-shaped and colored stone floats dead center, its shadow cast only on the inside edge of the orb. So the shadow is never cast outside of the "glass" and therefore never far from the peach.
Macaque takes the box and spends a moment examining the scenes, smiling softly. Wukong put a lot of thought into this, which is touching. He gets that same warm feeling that he had when Lucifer proposed to him.
When he opens the box, Macaque inhales just a touch sharply. It's...
"It's really beautiful." And the meaning says a lot. The peach and the shadow are always together.
Concerns? What concerns?
Macaque finds a place to set the box and the orb down so that he can step over and hug Wukong.
Wukong relaxes noticeably, wrapping his arms around Macaque and smiling. "I'm glad. It also only responds to you."
This was a big project, even for someone who can basically do whatever he wants now skill-wise. But it needed to be perfect. Do exactly what he wanted it to. The crafting was easy. The painting too. But it's the first time he's used magic this precisely and sustained.
"I love you too. Even if I don't also say it out loud. I'll try to more often."
"I know just where to put it in my room." He's going to get a decorative table and put it right next to his nest, where he can see and touch it all the time.
This means a lot, both because he can tell the work that went into this and because Wukong is doing this for Macaque, to make sure that he knows where he stands. It's not easy for Wukong to express himself like this, Macaque knows that all too well.
He shakes his head against Wukong's shoulder. "There's nothing that I'd ever want to change about you. If you can't find the words sometimes, it's okay. I'll find my reassurance in the way you hold me. And in this gift."
It's not something he can wear like the ring Lucifer gave him, but unless his powers are being fucked with, he'll be able to touch that orb from anywhere. Open a portal and see both it and the lovely box, and know that everything will be fine.
Wukong has, and always will be a doing. He's a monkey, so words don't speak as loud as doing. So he chose to do this for Macaque, as a way to express himself. Something he'll never be able to do for someone else in the same way if at all.
He starts to purr. "It's not a big change to make. I just have to remind myself that you don't really think like a monkey. But I'll hold you whenever you need." And even when he doesn't.
"I'm too verbose for a normal monkey," he says with a soft laugh that he breathes against Wukong's neck. "But you've never made me feel like I wasn't one. And that means a great deal, believe it or not."
It can't erase his past, but it helps him heal, little by little.
Macaque peels back to give Wukong a lidded look. "Will you kiss me whenever I need, too?"
Re: New Year's Eve - Video
Macaque glances at the box, then back up to Wukong. Courting thing...?
--Oh.
Macaque's mouth moves a bit. It's not often that he's speechless. But he recovers in a few moments.
"If how much I love you is any indication, you're great at the whole courting thing."

Re: New Year's Eve - Video
Macaque flushes just at the tips of his ears when Wukong mentions concerns. Yeah, he has them. But...
"I think my concerns are more fear, because I've already lost you once and I couldn't take it again."
