[ First things first: TACKLE HUG ATTACK. It was a Long Day At Work — she's still wearing her uniform, in fact — that may or may not have included a warning from the Birdtile's favorite fire bull demon that it's almost time for her to take a week off.
And … Yeah. That's about right. Her wings are fully moulted and her tail is very nearly finished, too. God knows if she'll get lucky enough to have some breathing space between Itchy Nightmare Hell and Hormonal Instinct Hell. ]
So, your staff! Am I just gonna hold it or do I get to try hitting something with it?
Tackle hug is very effective! Macaque catches her and sobs her around once before seeing her down. She's so cute when she wants to bash things, and all the other times too.
"If you can hold it and move it you can hit things. But it's not like a regular solid object, it's shadow magic. Holding it will take a little focus."
He spins his staff out of a deep shadow and holds it or for her. "Remember what I've taught you. Focus on the light sources and making the shadows move with those in mind."
[ Just holding it is gonna be at least one step further than anything she's done with shadow magic before …
Korone's smile brightens to a bright, beaming grin. She asked for this challenge; there's no way she's going to give it anything less than everything. ]
I'll do my best! [ First, though, she dispels the glamour on her tail (which was already hidden by her skirt). She's been practising that particular trick a lot over this past week, holding it for up to half an hour at a time in various environments, testing her willpower and her concentration. Dropping it is like a weight off her shoulders … except instead of her shoulders it's her brain? Whew.
That done, she reaches for his staff, drawing from their previous lessons and especially from the memory of how it had felt when he used shadow magic. It's enough that she's able to hold it; able to feel the weight of it in her hand. ]
He watches her like any proud father would, making a soft, approving sound when she's able to hold the staff. It's quite heavy by default but she'd be able to lighten it up with enough effort.
He avoids saying anything positive for taboo reasons.
[ That little sound of approval alone is enough to see her wings puff up happily. ]
Hefty … [ Korone doesn't sound at all intimidated by that. Big stick good. She bounces it in her hand, then gently tosses it from one to the other, back again and back again.
Next comes a twirl, two-handed to start. The shadows waver but she manages to pull it back together long before she might have lost her grip. ]
Macaque watches her work with the staff, pleased that she can handle it and only had to adjust the once. (It's a pain that he can't tell her so, but alas. Indirect compliments will have to do.)
A short distance away, Macaque sets up a series of shadow targets. Each has a different color of light shot through it, so therefore each of them will require a slight adjustment to strike.
[ Holding it is straightforward enough, though she wouldn't necessarily call it easy — goodness knows she won't be able to fight with this anytime soon. Moving it … that's trickier, as she'd expected, and using it to hit a target is gonna be another step up from there.
She gives it another twirl or two. Left hand, right hand, both hands once again. It all stays steady and solid … … until she takes a step forward, and promptly has to pause, adjusting again.
… Another step?
Another adjustment.
Another step — success! She lets out a breath once she finally makes it across the short distance to the first target, shooting Macaque a quick smile to reassure him that she's not getting discouraged. Then, she turns her attention to the target; to the angle of the light and the play of it through the shadows. Looking from it to the staff and back again, until she finally thinks, okay, she's probably got this — and strikes!
It's not nearly powerful enough to break the target. Nowhere close. But it's a solid, physical hit with a satisfying thunk to it, holy shit! She chirps in delight, her wings fluffing and flaring out — and that moment of excited distraction is enough to break her concentration, and by proxy her grip on the staff. ]

i have two hands and a will to throw down, we're all about equal opportunity shovel talks in this house ლ(╹◡╹ლ)

I assume "shovel" references either whacking the offender with one or burying their body afterwards?
Re: May 13th
shovels make pretty good weapons in a pinch after all ƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ
Re: May 13th
Re: May 13th
but yeah shovels are fun to swing!! it's the weight i think. super satisfying! (p≧w≦q) playing around with one is what got me thinking about scythes
(can i use shadows to make blades eventually?? because turning my staff into a scythe via shadow magic sounds SO cool)
Re: May 13th
Scythes are complicated because of the balance, but I have faith in you. And it'll be fun to train with.

Five seconds later, one appears beside her, leading out to his favorite training spot in the Autumn segment.
"Hey, babygirl." He loves the enthusiasm.
