"I told Wukong in the simulation. And I told Cole after we got out of the simulation. So yeah. I told them. They took it well. How did Red Son take it? You beat me to the punch there. Which is fine."
"Good. I'll probably still talk to Cole on my own, just to make sure. It's a little different with Wukong since it seems like he and I have worked out all our... stuff." Hopefully MK gets why it feels different. When everyone in a given set of people are seeing each other to whatever degree there's less apt to be any issues with things feeling unbalanced. Still can happen, but less likely.
"I only told Red because we were talking about us anyway. She was freaked out that I was about to cut her loose, thinking maybe my feelings for her changed because my feelings for Wukong got turned back on again. A fair thing to worry about, but that's not how this works. Wukong and I were and are what we were and are, but that has no bearing on my feelings for her. Or for you, in case it was a concern."
"It's not. Different flavors and all that," Mk said with a smile. He knew Macaque and Wukong were important to each other in a way that was special for them. Like how Mk was special to Macaque in a special way. Same with Red Son and him and Red Son and Macaque. All different flavors.
"I'll talk to Red Son too. Just to make sure of some things between us. Need to remind him he's my first. I'm gonna let him mark me first too. I think he'll really appreciate that. And I want him to be the first one. And then if you, Cole, or Wukong wanna mark me after, then you can pick your spots."
Macaque isn't going to say anything about ordinals. He promised Red that he wouldn't choose between her and Wukong, and he won't. He also knows that she probably didn't push the issue because she's afraid of the answer.
"I didn't talk to Wukong about the mark thing yet." They got sidetracked. "I assume it'll be fine, but supposing that and actually doing anything about it are different matters, and I've hurt him enough for even an immortal lifetime. If he'd rather I didn't with you or Red, or not yet, then it's only fair that I give him the chance to say so."
...Which sort of sounds like he's making Wukong the first priority, but he doesn't see it that way. He promised, that's all.
"Oh that's totally fair. I didn't mean like tomorrow or anything. Just down the line. Like later. But Red Son should get the first one. That's all I meant," Mk said with a nod.
"I am glad you two talked and things are going well. You both deserve to be happy and you need each other in your lives to be happy."
He does wonder why Red gets the first one and not Cole, but it's not Cole's mating ritual (as far as he knows).
"There's a reason I compared him to the sun. He was the only important person in my life for ages. It's good that I have others now, because you're both good for me by virtue of who you each are, but also it's good for me and Wukong too. I think part of the problem was that I took everything too personally because I was hypersensitive to everything he did. I lost myself in him and at the time I considered that no great loss. But it wasn't fair to either of us."
"Anyway. I'm determined not to make the same mistakes again. With anyone."
"Good. That sounds like a very good thing," Mk said and gave Macaque another kiss. "So I don't think that was all you wanted to talk about, right? How are the kids? They doing okay?"
"Not really. Choco went after her, beat up those goons enough to get Eve back out, and Donnie was full-brain on triaging her which means he's not coping very well. I got the info from her and washed the blood off her while Donnie worked on Eve. Choco specifically said to do anything short of killing them, so..." That was for sure the plan until MK showed up.
"That has to be hard for all of you. Thank you again. For listening. For not going too far. I really appreciate it. I know you can hurt them. Like really badly. I just also know you get worried about that darkness inside you."
"I get worried about it normally. After seeing what they did, that they dosed Eve and Choco with obedience drugs, I wasn't worried about the darkness. I wanted to do worse than kill them."
He leans against MK and chirps: soothing, promise, regret.
"...There's something else you should know too. Someone from Cole's world was here. A fae. He said that he'd let me help Cole if I made a deal with him. So..." Yeah.
"Obedience drugs?" MK focused on that. They drugged them with obedience drugs? How did they even make those? It made MK's smile completely vanish. That was terrifying and truly evil. An evil that Mk hated. So much. He went quiet as he tried to focus on the other part. A deal with one of the fae? Cole had warned him about them. Especially after the mushrooms. The...that had to be how they made the drugs.
Macaque peels away enough to look at MK, smiling a bit to ensure him that he's he's fine.
"Some guy from Cole's world showed up and was talking about Cole dying, apparently not for the first time. Apparently he was looking for deals, and he said he'd tell Cole whatever he wanted to know if I kissed him. It was easy enough, but after that I asked if it was possible for me to help Cole if I went to his world. And he said yes, that he'd tell me exactly where and how to help if I did something for him. Steal his rival's shadow, not something that would hurt anyone. So I agreed. For that price, I can help Cole three times."
He pauses. "I know you might not love this, but I couldn't just let things go. If I can help, I felt like I should. He said he'll bring me back to our world, or here if we're still here, after I'm done."
MK listened and his heart raced as the worry picked up with the words Cole dying and then more with it not being the first time?! He felt terrified right now. Cole could die? And Macaque made a deal with one of the things that stole people, like Cole, and changed them forever. To go help Cole in their world? This felt terrifyingly huge. In a way that Mk wasn't sure how to grasp. They'd all talked about going between worlds and others had but this felt suddenly so very very real.
"I don't love it but...I get it. I'd probably have dome the same thing. Just...be careful. Okay? I know Cole will never forgive himself if anything happens to you. He hates it when bad things happen to the people he cares about. It hurts him. So much. And you're really really important to him."
Macaque wraps MK in his arms and holds him tight. He knew this would be hard to hear for a lot of reasons.
"Of course I will be. I knew he wouldn't like it either, he lost it a little when I signed the contract, but the fact that he was telling me it was too dangerous for me to go there didn't do wonders for my confidence that he'd be fine." Also the multiple dying episodes, that also didn't help.
"It'll be what it is, but I don't regret it. I have to at least try."
MK snuggled closer and squeezed Macaque tight. He nodded. Of course he understood. If anyone could, it would be MK. That need to try and do anything for the people who mattered most.
"I get it. I do. And I believe in you. If anyone is gonna be able to help him, it'll be you. I just hope you didn't get tricked at all or anything. Cole says those Fae are super bad news. Like, the worst kinda news."
It's a relief that MK isn't losing his mind about this. Probably because he can understand the impulse to leap in headfirst when someone you love is in danger.
"He's using me, no doubt about that. I can't see all the angles when I'm not familiar with their world or the situation. There probably are a lot of things I'm not catching because of that, but I don't get the impression that he's trying to fuck Cole over so much as advance his own goals. And he seems to like me for whatever reason, so I'm hoping that helps." He encouraged it as much as possible, in fact.
"I'll do my best for Cole, even if it means working with someone who definitely has ulterior motives. Even if it means Cole's upset with me." Macaque can take that. As long as Cole is spared worse outcomes, he can take anything.
"Cole said that if he died I wouldn't carry it with me forever. It's impressive how wrong he is about that." That one hurt, and it shows in his voice.
MK was filled with anxiety over this but he understood the reasons for the risk. Why Macaque would put himself in this position. MK would have done the same, honestly. He would have for any of them.
"I mean, you are pretty likeable. So it's hard not to," MK admitted, trying to lighten the mood. Which didn't totally work, hearing Cole said that and the pain it clearly caused.
"Maybe he meant if you go to another world or we go home and somehow don't remember anything? I don't think Cole would think you'd like get over him and forget. That doesn't sound like something Cole would say..." MK swallowed. He could ask Cole but putting each other in the middle of things felt wrong. Hopefully Macaque would ask Cole about it. Talk that out.
"You should talk to him about it all when you both have a chance. Clear the air. It sounds like him saying that hurt you."
Macaque swallow hard before nodding. He'd usually try to play this off but he's so tired of hiding from MK.
"It did. It's possible that I misunderstood, he was pretty upset, but that's definitely how it sounded."
He can't believe that Cole would think that, especially when Macaque was so worried that he was signing deals to try and help... all the same, he said it.
"I can ask him about it. We should probably talk anyway."
Seeing Macaque like this hurt but MK was so glad he could see him like this. That he could show how upset he was now. He wrapped his arms tighter around the shadow monkey and kissed his forehead a few times.
"Sometimes when we're upset, we say stupid things in ways we don't mean them. Talk to him. You can do it. You care about each other a lot, I can tell. Talk and figure it out." Macaque was still Macaque but this new habit had to make him feel even more vulnerable. Especially to someone he cared about insinuating he would leave and reject them when Macaque obviously never wanted to do that. Like it had been done to him.
"Take your time. You got time. We all gone time. You want me to stay here with you tonight? I can sleep over. We can snuggle all night and just be here. Together. You and me."
MK's embrace helps, it always does. Macaque denied himself that for too long, but somewhere between losing his emotions and the heart game those walls just crumbled. He doesn't have it in him, especially when giving in feels like this.
"I will. I promise." A pause, as Macaque considers something. "I said that if I got hurt he'd carry it with him even beyond death, so I have no idea why he thinks it would be different for me. Maybe I haven't been direct enough about my feelings." Which is a habit he's trying to break, obviously.
He smiles when MK suggests staying over, although... "You don't have plans elsewhere?"
"I don't know why either but I know Cole has always been kinda slow to open his heart. I can't read his mind but I know if you tell him that no matter what, memories or not, your heart would remember him. And if you knew something bad was or did happen to him, your heart always would remember. I think he'll understand," MK said and put his hand over Macaque's heart. He smiled softly.
"None at all. I'm here and yours all night, if you want. Your North Star isn't going anywhere."
Macaque shrugs a tiny bit. Maybe he means forgetting altogether, like happened to him. Forgetting this place. Which Macaque can't even think about, that would mean losing his kids, his entire relationship with Red... and this right here. It would be unendurable.
He holds MK a little tighter and nuzzles his way into his neck. "We'll figure it out. I'm not going to hold anything against him, he was upset and he had a right to be."
--Anyway. "Yes. Stay, please." Get a crash course in what a complete snugglebug Macaque can be.
